Kanaka literally means Gold while Lata signifies a plant particularly climbers, hence the term denotes a golden climber. It is again a mythical plant described in various scriptures and later literary creations. Often beautiful women has also been compared with Kanaklata, which is free flowing and having an imagery of growing or moving. We find the curving of Kanaklata in traditional temples or in the cave paintings or murals of Ajanta and Ellora. We see their abundance in much simpler forms in the Bengal village alpona motifs especially drawn during the Laxmi puja or other pious festivals. They have also made their way with quite ease in the Shantiniketan style of alpona.
